Privacy & Confidentiality

In new media, especially social media many people are putting private information onto the internet. Information which cannot really be deleted and will can be shared by the platform which they used. Recently, there has been a lot of problems with Facebook sharing information about the users, including demographics, status’s, and pictures. It is said that it is being given away for profits. It isn’t just Facebook that has had this problem but other media too.

P2P file sharing

File sharing is the ability for people to share files with other people. It is often deemed as illegal but the market is huge. P2P File sharing, also known as person to person file sharing  is the ability for peers to share files and information. These files include movies and programs which are copy-writ. Some examples are explain in Clive Thompson’s article The BitTorrent Effect. BitTorrent is “one of the most successful peer-to-peer programs ever.” It is used to download large items such as movies, applications, and programs.

The Next New Thing

A social media which I think would be good that doesn’t exist is one to further the aid of crafting, particularly in crochet. Many times, people create patterns which can have kinks in it. I think it would be good if a wiki-like platform was created so other users can edit a pattern if it doesn’t work when it is re-created. I think this would help develop the best patterns as well as the most user friendly.

Creativity and New Media

ImageImageImageImageI believe people are naturally are creative. This type of creativity differs person to person, but I believe that everyone is capable of making something amazing! This could be ideas or objects, whether it is tangible or intangible it doesn’t matter. It is now easier than ever to show people what you’re capable of. I personally use facebook to show baked good that I have made. This has helped me soo much! I have gotten orders placed for my goodies, I have been asked how to do things, and I have been seen as someone with a skill. New media has been very helpful for people to get recognition for their skills which makes them want to do more.

Creativity

New media has a lot of good things about it. One of them being that the user is able to express their views as they see fit. So many people are able to express themselves with little judgement or censor ship. Companies now are taking that one step further. In the article, Twitter serves up ideas from it’s followers, it is shown that twitter users and social media users are given the ability to share their ideas and the companies listen to them. These comments made in social media have the ability to change products and companies.

Blogging about TWITTER!

I don’t think you can go anywhere outside of your home without hearing somebody having a discussion. We discuss with our neighbors, our friends, out colleges, our peers, our superiors, our subordinates. Most of the time people are not just talking to talk. They are working towards a goal. As a college student, I have two main in school discussions, those on blackboard, and those in-class (ignoring the caddishness with my friends). This semester a new way of student, teacher, peer discussion was proposed- via twitter. To my surprise, it can work! I believe an in-class discussion is too easy to be circular. Students don’t think about their point before they make it, and teachers do the same. On twitter however, each party has only 140 characters and they must know exactly what needs to be said before it is said. This way, a discussion can be done more concisely and more productively. On blackboard, It can be even worse. Trying to follow thread after thread, without any notification the discussion is continuing it frustrating. Not to mention, these discussions can last forever. Twitter on the other hand is quick and easy to respond. You can be notified if someone has replied, and as stated above it has to be more concise.

Short, sweet, and to the point.

Social Network Sites

Social Networking- when I say those words, the first thing that pops into my head is Facebook, but there is so many other sites that have the potential to do the same thing like: Myspace, Twitter, and Tumblr. I recently took to all four of these sites. I also took a walk back down memory lane and compared them. These sites, although all have the purpose of social networking have different attributes. They can actually be split into two groups: Social Networking and Blogging. Facebook and Myspace have moved closer to one another. Taking the best aspects of each other in order to succeed. Facebook is however the most dominant. On the other hand, Twitter is microblogging and Tumblr is seen as blogging. Tumblr itself though is a crossover between blogging on sites (such as blogger) and twitter. It is focused more on smaller more frequent posts. Twitter has given it’s best aspects to social networking as well. Facebook which once used only 140 characters as now expanded but has opened up more. It got rid of the Blank Blank is……

It is interesting how none of these sites are exclusive from the other but similarities can be found in all!

Social Networking

New media and technologies have allowed people to connect faster than ever. It has allowed people young and old. More importantly, it is a good platform for companies and individuals to market and network. For examples, local companies are able to market to a global platform as well as connect with those both alike and different.

Companies are able to speak directly to their customers, and discuss the issues they are encountering (social.pdf). This benefits society not only on a commercial scale but also on a philanthropic one. A new charity can show the world what it’s doing, and allow people to get more involved. There is however, a dark side.

Privacy to people’s personal information is often a worry. A recent study just found that even younger users, 18 and 19 year olds care about their privacy (The Chronical). On the same note, bullying is a wide spread epidemic to those who are frequent users of social networking.

Although social networks have made it easier to connect, more than ever. There is a dangerous side. Users have to be careful, but the benefits are able to outweigh the consequences.

Blogs vs Wikis

In this day and age, it is almost impossible to live without using some type of Social Media. With smart phones, it’s become even easier to take any free time and use it toward social media. There are two types of truly collaborative social media are Blogs and Wiki. Blogs, are individual posts where others can comment and have a conversation about. While, wikis have multiple editors. Both of these have an important role in our society.

Blogs can be created for or by communities. This shared space can be used to better something, change the ideas, and to get to know others better. An example of a blog which was used positively, was that of BayRidgeTalk.com, where a community bounded together which led to the arrest of the wrong doers in the neighborhood. (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/26/nyregion/26bayridge.html?_r=0).

Wikis on the other hand are get for a smaller specific group, where individuals can ban together and bring in their respective expertise in once central place. I believe wikis to have a more professional feel, and so do others, which is why more companies are turning to wikis to get things accomplished. With the centralization of this information companies are able to “were able to make better decisions and get the project done faster” according to cio.com (http://www.cio.com/article/336818/More_on_How_to_Build_Your_Own_Wikipedia).

It’s very difficult to compare Wikis and blogs, because they are so different. They’re like apples and oranges. Although they do have similarities, such as allowing a community come together to converge, they hold two different places in social media.

(Mirco) Blogging: The Positive and Negative

My research topic will explore the positive and negative aspects of blogging and micro blogging. It will begin with a clear definition of the two and dig further into the similarities and the differences between them. I will also discuss the different types of blogging and micro blogging. Beyond the definitions, I will explore physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of the two. I will discuss professional’s views in both the positive and negative aspects of the previously mentioned. As technology is evolving, it is important to know as much information as possible these new medias.
